On Thin Ice by MarselvanOosten

Already on the second day of our new polar bear photo tour in Svalbard, we encountered this beautiful female bear on the pack ice. As we chartered a small vessel for just our group, we were able to (slowly) get quite close to this bear. Another advantage of shooting from a small ship is that you get a nice low perspective - our main reason to select this particular ship. When we first saw this bear, she was just chilling on the ice and gave us a good show with a large variety of poses. Yes, we train our subjects very well :-) Eventually she got up and walked towards our ship, so we had to change from the long telephoto lenses to a 70-200 and eventually even wide angle lenses. She ended up spending quite a bit of time with us - I guess we were a nice distracting from an otherwise pretty uneventful habitat. When your subject is as pretty and impressive as a polar bear, it's easy to be tempted to shoot everything very tight to show as much as possible of this amazing creature. However, it's the stunning scenery that makes this place to special, and in my opinion so much better than most of the other places where you can photograph polar bears. It's the ice that makes all the difference. If you're interested in joining me on this spectacular trip, please check out my website for more details: www.squiver.com The first tour is already fully booked, but there are a few spaces available on the second one.
